Cardio is the shortened name for “cardiovascular” or “aerobic” exercises. You can do cardio exercises in many ways because the goal of a cardio exercise is to increase your heart rate for an extended period of time.
While strength training focuses on strengthening your muscles, cardio focuses on strengthening your heart and lungs. When your heart and lungs get stronger, they get better at pumping oxygen to the rest of your body, slowing the rate you get fatigued for extended activity without rest.
Some of the most common cardio exercises include walking, running, and cycling, but did you know you can get a cardio workout even from lifting weights? Want to find out how? Time to find out how!
Strength training, or “resistance training” and “weight training” as it’s also called, strives to build muscle by applying resistance to the target muscle, either from a weight, band, or your own body weight. When your muscles contract against the resistance, tiny tears are created in your muscle fibers that your body repairs when you’re resting. Once repaired, the muscle becomes stronger and can work against stronger resistances.
A cardio exercise may have you run for 10 or 20 minutes straight, but a strength training exercise may have you lift a weight 10 times, resting for a minute or two, and then lifting again. This pattern of active and rest periods allow your muscles to get some rest between sets so they can continue lifting challenging weight throughout the workout.
Many people think you need a full gym equipped with hundreds of pounds of weights and equipment, but did you know you can complete a full body strength training routine with only a pair of dumbbells?
Those unfamiliar with yoga may think it is simply stretching your muscles, but yoga is a practice that has been around for hundreds of years with a unique approach to overall health and fitness. By focusing on improving the mind, body, and spirit connection through different poses, breathing techniques, and meditation, yoga improves physical fitness while also helping calm the mind, reducing stress and anxiety.
Just like cardio and strength training, how you challenge your body with different yoga routines determines what kind of workout you will have. Some routines focus on postures and breathing techniques, others use flowing movements coordinated with breathing, and others follow a set of poses that gradually increase in difficulty.
Most people pick either cardio or strength training when starting their fitness journey, but yoga is worth considering as a starting point. Find out why yoga may be the best place for you to start.
